Terms

Terms of use

keysprint is a free tool provided as it is. These terms describe what you can expect from it, what is expected of you, and the limits of both.

The service

keysprint provides an online typing test, a set of touch typing lessons and a set of practice drills. It is provided free of charge and without an account. Use of the site means accepting these terms; if you do not accept them, please stop using the site.

The typing test measures the characters you type against a passage shown on screen. The score it produces is a measurement of that session and nothing else.

What the measurements are, and are not

A typing score is an estimate taken over a short window, on one machine, on one day, with one passage. It is a useful number and a fair description of that session, and it is not a clinical, educational or professional assessment of anyone's ability.

  • Results depend on the device and the conditions. A score taken on a laptop keyboard is not comparable with one taken on a mechanical keyboard, and a score taken while distracted is not comparable with a focused one.
  • Short tests are noisier than long ones. A fifteen second result is a rough guide; a three or five minute result is a steadier reading.
  • The scoring method is described, not hidden. The formulas are set out on the about page, and the code that applies them is covered by unit tests.
  • Nothing here is medical, educational or professional advice. The lessons are general instruction on typing technique, not a substitute for a qualified instructor.

Your use of the site

You are welcome to:

  • Use the typing test and the lessons as often as you like, for any lawful purpose.
  • Use the site on a shared or public computer. There is no account to sign out of.
  • Link to any page on the site from anywhere.
  • Quote a short passage from the site, or show a screenshot of the results panel, when writing a review or an article.

You agree not to:

  • Copy the site, its design or its text wholesale and publish it elsewhere. Short quotations and links are fine; a republished copy of the site is not.
  • Present the site as your own, or use its name or branding in a way that suggests an official endorsement.
  • Attempt to interfere with the site, overload it with automated requests, or bypass the limits on how often a test may be run.
  • Use the site to break the law, or to infringe anyone else's rights.

Intellectual property

The text passages used in the typing test, the lesson material and the drills were written for keysprint and are protected by copyright. You are welcome to quote short extracts and to use the site as a link, and that permission extends to screenshots of the interface for reviews, tutorials and course material.

The software that runs the site, including the scoring engine and the text selection logic, is part of the project. It is not sold and it is not licensed for redistribution.

Availability and changes

keysprint is provided as it is and as it is available. The site may change, and pages may be moved or removed. There is no uptime guarantee and no service level commitment.

Because the site is hosted on a free tier, it may be paused or restarted by the hosting provider from time to time, and it may be unavailable for short periods.

No warranty

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the person behind keysprint is not liable for any loss or damage arising from the use of the site or the inability to use it, including loss of data or loss of stored scores.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated from time to time. The date at the bottom of this page shows when they were last revised, and the revised version applies from the moment it is published. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
